The public services should not rule out advertising as a source of revenue.

Nottinghamshire Police are considering selling space on their vehicles for advertising. The reason for this proposal is to plug gaps in their budget caused by reductions in funding.

Anything that allows them to get the budget in place to be able to carry out their duties should be accepted. With all this austerity around I am not surprised but only think I can say is it had best be ethical advertisers and not scum corporations that prey on the poor.

When governments and their services become so intertwined with corporations that you can't tell one from the other, you have fascism. Those who maintain the laws of the land cannot wear the colours of any organization/corporation/ideology without inviting corruption and manipulation of those laws.

Who determines what the "Police " or local councils consider "Ethical".

While this does bring in revenue which is needed to keep emergency services running and could be extended to the fire, ambulance, coastguard and air ambulance services there is a significant concern in the case of the police and that regards impartiality.

For the ambulance service to advertise Boots the Chemists is not going to cause conflict of interest problems and I can see fire alarm companies or fire extinguisher companies lining up to put adds on fire engines saying buy us or see this parked outside the police are a special case.

How much ,money is considered bribery, what happens when the police out of concern for maintaining a desperately needed revenue stream begin to consciously or subconsciously change they way they act towards their sponsors.

After all the police, an organisation that must be seen to be completely impartial would be taking money from companies or individuals to pay its bills. The mere fact that it is happening leaves them open to calls of bribery even if they have done nothing wrong.

Still give it time and most of our police forces will be run by Group 4 police when such things become the norm.

Great points Jim, fully accept them all as well. Then again what do they do if they cannot carry out their duties because they just dont have the money? What do you say to a family waiting for a Police office to arrive to an incident but they are delayed and the housewife is not saved? the kids finish stabbing and getting away from the crime scene?

Well the easy answer to that is to fund them properly.
