Chemical castration is not permanent, it requires medication to lower testosterone etc.. Is reversible, so perhaps not as barbaric as some think. If sexual offences are caused by mental illness or hormone / ability to control ones actions that cause harm to others a medical intervention can treat the symptoms.

You don't need a knife for chemical castration. And it has been piloted by psychiatrists at HMP Whatton, Nottingham

i would say only those who have been found guilty of a crime, so serious as being condemned to imprisonment for a duration of least 23 years. But a short soft trial on a voluntary basis for other 1st offenders: why not?
